The Kasaragod District Basketball Association came in to being on 9-12-1984, when Kannur Revenue District was bifurcated.
Even before the formation of Kerala State in 1956 the game was flourishing in Nileshwar and Tellicherry which were part of North Malabar in Madras State.
The first basketball Court in the District too was in Nileshwar from where eminent players like Damodaran Nambiar and Aravindan Nambiar came up. They wore the jersy of St. Alousious College Mangalore (Mysore state) in late 50s.
In the early years of its formation at Nileshwar only 4 clubs were affiliated to the association. The game rooted fast in the district under the able leadership of Eng. T.T.V. Baskaran as the first President and Joy George as the Hon. Secretary. The services of Late N.K. Balakrishnan, Minister of Kerala as the first patron is ever remembered. Now the association has 12 Registered clubs and 7 institutions as members.
Senior State Championships were hosted by K.D.B.A. at Nileshwar during 1987, 1993 & 1999.
The association is proud of Sri. M. Ashokan Nair, who played for junior India at Philippines in 1989. Yet another name in golden letters is of Sri. P. Gopalakrishnan, who was captain of Kerala in South Zone National -1996, and Ludhiana National – 1998. Mr. Gopalakrishnan was the Fiasto gold medalist in 1996-97 and the coach of Kerala senior team in the nationals – 2000. A reputed woman star is Bindu Koroth who represented Kerala Women Team twice in 1993 & 1994 & Indian Railways continuously from 1996 to 2002.

At present the association is lead by Sri. K.C. Manavarma Raja, President (Best State Teacher Award Winner 2003) & P. Gopalakrishnan, Secretary (K.S.E.B), supported by a group of energetic executive committee members and well wishers of the District.
