District Basketball Asociations

Alleppey, the Venice of the East, is rightly hailed as the cradle of Basketball. The first Basketball team was formed during 1948 under the able guidance and leadership of late N.V. Naidu Phy. Director of S.D. College, Alleppey.

In 1957 KSRTC Basketball team, with its HQ at Alleppey, came into existence, Mr. Palaniappan being instrumental in its formation. The Transport team consisted of M/s. P.K. Palaniappan, P.S. Viswappan, N. Mony, K. Manoharan and Mr. Hegde who were employees of the KSRTC, and guest players like M/s. Thomas J Fenn, P. K. George, K. Gopinath, I.T. Chacko, K.T. Joseph, M. I. Paul and Parthasarathy. Mr. Viswappan and Mr. Fenn are qualified NIS coaches and International Referees.

The former joined the Kerala University as Basketball Coach while the later joined the Sports Council of Kerala. Mention should be made of Fr.Philips Wadakekalam who rose to the eminence as International Referee approved by FIBA. Afterwards Alleppey generated many NIS Coaches, National Referees as well as Indian, State and University players.

The period from 1960 to 1985 witnessed the Parambi All India Basketball Tournament organised by the District Basketball Association Alleppey. The tourney was almost a popular festival in this town which attracted lovers of sports from all parts of Kerala. It was the first of its kind in Kerala.

Allepy DBA has successfully conducted National Federation Cup Championship during 1996.

Allepy YMCA All Kerala Basketball Tournament is one of the best tournaments in Kerala. Alleppy YMCA Basketball Academy (AYBA), the first of its kind in India, started here during March 1995 under the guidance of YMCA.

Summer Coaching Camps

We are proud to state that to fulfil the desire of the Basketball lovers, we have conducted twelve Summer Coaching Camps so far, the best of its kind in Kerala, imparting training to more than 2000 boys and girls under the age group of 8 to 15 and advance training to the seniors. Our special thanks are due to M/s. P.S. Viswappan, Thomas Fenn, Mathew D’cruz, Unnikrishnan Nair, Binu Manoharan, Biju Viswappan, B. Subash, Sunil Natarajan etc. for their sincere effort to bring back the glory of Basketball in the town and around. Special mention should be made to the laudable effort on the part of Alleppey YMCA in making available a Mini Basketball Court in their premises also for the benefit of young boys and girls.

Joseph, Dr. Kuriappan Varghese,N. M. G. Prasad, Mathew D’Cruz, Fr. M.C. Joseph, Fr. S. Kakkanad, Venugopal P. J. Francis and Sr. Annet Thottakara are praiseworthy.

Alleppy DBA is the only association having its own Basketball Court & Office.
