Wayanad District Basketball Association was formed in the year 1980. Mr. M.P. Chandranath, a planter by profession was the President and Mr. E. P. Issac, Physical Education Teacher, S.K.M.J. High School Kalpetta was its Secretary. Mr. Joseph Chacko, Mr. Jose Thomas Chirayil. Mr. Sudheer Kumar Vijaya High School Pulpally, were at the helm of the association for three times, Mr. A. K. Mathew, St. Mary’s High School Mullankolly who was the joint secretary of the association since 1980, became the Hon. Secretary in 1996 and is shouldering that responsibility now with great zeal and enthusiasm. Mr. Mathew Arunassery, a former BSF basketball team member, serving the association as the senior Vice President since 1996. Fr. Mathai Pallichamkudy, Corporate Manager, Diocese of Mananthavady has been the patron of the association from 2000 onwards.
In 2005, the general body unanimously elected Prof. Saju Jacob, Head of Department of Physical Education, Pazhassi Raja College, Pulpally as the President and Mr. A. K. Mathew as the Hon. Secretary.
Wayanad District basically a hilly area does not have enough schools with proper facilities and infrastructure for sports activities. The District Basketball Association is presently motivating a number of private management schools to construct basketball courts. In areas like Mullankolly and Pulpally three schools and college have basketball courts where a lot of young probables are turning to this game with much enthusiasm.
Achievements
The District Association conducted the 15th state youth Championship at Vijaya High School, Pulpally (1997-98) and the 26th State Junior Championship at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School Mullankolly (May 2002). With the support of the association, Pazhassi Raja College, Pulpally conducted Calicut University Inter Zone Championship for men and women twice (2002-2003, 2005-2006).
Due to the non-availability of proper training facilities in colleges and higher secondary schools, the promising players of this district are wearing the colours of other districts and clubs after their schooling.
Mr. Ullas Joseph now with TISCO represented Junior India from this district. A number of college students represented Calicut, Kerala and M.G. Universities.
This year the association is conducting the 25th District Senior Basketball Championship. District Championships for Junior and Youth are also being conducted since its inception.
The association has five qualified state panel referees.
