18th July 2017: Three Keralites will represent Indian women’s basketball team e FIBA Women’s Asia Cup to be held is all set to take place from July 23-29 at the Kanteraava Indoor Stadium and Koramangala stadium in Bengaluru
Jeena PS and Anjanna PG and Grima Merlin Varghese all from Kerala State Electricity Board
Jeena who hails from Wayanad and her schooling from Sorts Hostel Kannur will be her third appearance in Asia Cup, While Anjana PG who hails from Kollam and Product of Centralised Spots Hostel in Kollam is her second Appearance and Grima who hails from Koratty is making the Senior Indian Team for the first time is from the Cradle of basketball Little Flower HSS Koratty
The team is being coached by newly appointed Serbian Head Coach Zoran Visic, and assisted by Coach Shiba Maggon comprises, apart from the Three KSEB players Three other are form Indian Railways which include Veteran Anitha Paul Durai, Rajapriydrshini, and Navaneetha P
The Point guards Kavitha Akula the Point Guard the First Indian women selected at the NCAA is now studying at Cartyon University in USA and Barkha Sonkar is Now studying g in Hillsborough Community college in the USA and Anmol Preet Kaur the center who is now in Japan student at Togakuen High School other members include Raspreet Sidhu Delhi, JShireenLimaye from Pune Maharastra, and the tallest 6ft 9inches Poonam Chaturvedi, from Chhattisgarh
India is Playing this year in Level 2 needs to top Division B to get elevated into Division A for the next edition.
India will be Playing their first match against Uzbekistan on 23rd July and another team in the Group is SriLanka
India first participated in this event in 1970 and has competed 17 times in total. The Indian women’s team best finish in this tournament came in the year 2013 when it finished 5th, including a historic Level 1 victory. Prior to that, India’s best finish had been 6th place at the 1992, 2009 and 2011 iterations.
The preparations for the prestigious FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2017 are in full swing. At a press conference, yesterday at the Century Club, Bengaluru, BFI President K. Govindaraj and Secretary General Chander Mukhi Sharma scheduled an interaction with the media. They were joined by Mr. Anupam Agrawal [IPS], Director, Youth Empowerment, and Sports.
